John Russell Taylor’s flat was floor to ceiling with books and pictures. A precocious talent, he first wrote for The Times in his ’teens, became its film, theatre and art critic over four decades, and wrote over sixty books, including Alfred Hitchcock’s biography. The variety of works in his collection gives a flavour of his encyclopaedic mind, a man remembered for his phenomenal range of reference, extraordinary talent for writing and his warm and generous character.
