1992, poster, World Premiere, Thorndike Theatre, Leatherhead, starring Peter Egan, 79 x 53cm (framed), together with another smaller of the same play
(2)
Déjàvu was Osborne's last play, and a sequel to his first unequivocal success: Look Back in Anger. Jimmy Porter is once more the protagonist, but middle aged. Cliff his old friend also makes a return. And Jimmy is still having shirts ironed, but this time by his daughter Alison who loathes him. Osborne began writing the play in early December 1988 and finished it while despairing of his health and worried about that of Helen his wife on the 10th April 1989. The play was unceremoniously turned down by the Royal Court and others, including the NT who considered it too long. Both Alan Bates and Peter O'Toole were potentials to play Jimmy, but these ambitions also floundered. Eventually the first performance of Déjàvu took place at the Thorndike Theatre, Leatherhead on 8th May 1992, from where it transferred a month later to the Comedy Theatre in the West End, opening on 8th June, but ran for only seven weeks.
